THINGS TO COME
THINGS TO COME. By H.G.WELLS
(Cresset Press. 3s.6d.)
For some time past Mr. H.G.Wells has been actively assisting in the production of a film based on his book "The Shape of Things to Come," and in this present slim volume he prints, apparently "as delivered," the outline scenario or "descriptive treatment" from which the film has been forthwith directed. A highly dramatized version of his expansive prophecy of forthcoming war, destruction of civilization, and the building of a new society from the ruins, it tends to abandon the merits of its original presentation without making much effort to acquire or emulate those of its new medium. As it stands, it seems not so much a work in its own right as a glimpse into the author's notebook, interesting less in itself than in relation to the finished product--in this case, the actual film. If no one but Mr. Wells could have written it, it will scarcely take an important place among his writings.
